Chang Khlan
Night Bazaar, riverside restaurants, close to everything
What it is like
The strip between the south east corner of the Old City and the Ping, built around the Night Bazaar, which trades every evening of the year. Behind the bazaar it turns residential fast: lanes of houses, the wet market at Kad Kom, and small kitchens that open at six in the morning.
This is where we manage, and the part of Chiang Mai we know in more detail than any other. The guide we write for our own guests holds more entries here than in the other seven neighbourhoods combined, from the nearest pharmacy to the khao soi place people queue at.
Khlong Mae Kha, the canal running through it, has been reopened as a walkway and has changed the character of the blocks it passes. The hotels on the main road bring traffic, and with it the gyms, spas and pools that sell day passes.

Who it suits
Judgement rather than fact. This is how we answer a guest who asks us to choose between neighbourhoods.
- Guests who want the Old City and the river both inside walking distance.
- Anyone who eats where the neighbourhood eats rather than where the guidebooks point.
- Stays where the Night Bazaar is the point, or where late food matters.
- Less suited to guests who want quiet at all hours. Chang Khlan Road is a main road, and the blocks nearest the bazaar do not go quiet early.
