Hang Dong

pool villas, space and mountain views south of town

13 km from Tha Phae GateStraight line, not a road distance.

What it is like

South west of the city, past the airport, where the land opens out. Most of Chiang Mai's pool villas are here: single storey houses on their own plots, mountain on one side and rice on the other, with enough between neighbours that the pool is genuinely private.

It works on the assumption that you drive. There is no walkable centre in the way the Old City has one, and a ride into town is twenty to thirty minutes depending on the hour. Ban Tawai, the handicraft village, and the weekend markets around it are why a lot of visitors come out this way.

We have no first-hand notes on file for this neighbourhood. The guide we write for guests was built outwards from a house in Chang Khlan and does not reach here yet, so the description above is general rather than something we have walked and checked.

Who it suits

Judgement rather than fact. This is how we answer a guest who asks us to choose between neighbourhoods.

  • Families and groups who want a pool, a kitchen and rooms that are not stacked on top of each other.
  • Anyone renting a car or a motorbike in any case.
  • Stays where the house is the holiday rather than the base for one.
  • Less suited to a trip without a vehicle. Every errand becomes a booked ride, and the fares add up faster than the villa saves.

We do not manage anywhere in Hang Dong yet.

Rather than pad this page out, we would sooner say so. We take on properties one at a time and only where we can look after them properly, so this list grows slowly and on purpose.

Not sure this is the right neighbourhood?

Tell us who is travelling and what you want inside a ten minute walk. We will say which part of Chiang Mai fits, including when the answer is one we manage nothing in.
