Mae Rim
valley resorts and rice fields north of the city
What it is like
North of the city along the 107 and then up into the valley. Resorts, gardens, elephant camps and rice fields, with the road climbing gently the whole way. Temperatures run a degree or two below the city and the air is usually better for it.
It is a district rather than a neighbourhood: two addresses several kilometres apart both say Mae Rim, and what a stay is like depends almost entirely on which side of the road it is on and how far up the valley. Nothing here is walkable to anything else.
We have no first-hand notes on file for this neighbourhood. The guide we write for guests was built outwards from a house in Chang Khlan and does not reach here yet, so the description above is general rather than something we have walked and checked.
Who it suits
Judgement rather than fact. This is how we answer a guest who asks us to choose between neighbourhoods.
- Stays where quiet, green and cool are the point rather than being close in.
- Guests with a car, or a property that runs its own transport.
- The second half of a trip, after the city has been walked.
- Less suited to anyone who needs the city daily. The drive back in is forty minutes in the wrong part of the day.
We do not manage anywhere in Mae Rim yet.
Rather than pad this page out, we would sooner say so. We take on properties one at a time and only where we can look after them properly, so this list grows slowly and on purpose.
Not sure this is the right neighbourhood?
Tell us who is travelling and what you want inside a ten minute walk. We will say which part of Chiang Mai fits, including when the answer is one we manage nothing in.
