San Sai
suburban, family houses, near the international schools
What it is like
North east of the city, on the way to the ring road and the international schools. Suburban in the plain sense: housing estates, family houses with gardens, supermarkets rather than markets, and a lot of residents who drive into Chiang Mai every morning.
San Sai is somewhere people live rather than somewhere people visit, which is the honest description and also the appeal for a long stay. The city is fifteen to twenty five minutes by car, and the airport is on the far side of it.
We have no first-hand notes on file for this neighbourhood. The guide we write for guests was built outwards from a house in Chang Khlan and does not reach here yet, so the description above is general rather than something we have walked and checked.
Who it suits
Judgement rather than fact. This is how we answer a guest who asks us to choose between neighbourhoods.
- Families relocating, or trying the city for a season before committing.
- Long stays where a garden, a car park and a supermarket matter more than nightlife.
- Guests with children at one of the international schools nearby.
- Less suited to a short holiday. There is very little to walk to, and everything you came to Chiang Mai for is a drive away.
We do not manage anywhere in San Sai yet.
Rather than pad this page out, we would sooner say so. We take on properties one at a time and only where we can look after them properly, so this list grows slowly and on purpose.
Not sure this is the right neighbourhood?
Tell us who is travelling and what you want inside a ten minute walk. We will say which part of Chiang Mai fits, including when the answer is one we manage nothing in.
